Introducing Wicked Awesome Maine, a blog about owning a downeast vacation home and actually vacationing in downeast Maine

It wasn’t until I thought about writing a blog that I first realized that I’m not really sure what a blog is. I mean, I’ve read blogs, I’ve even written guest entries in other peoples’ blogs. But what, exactly is a blog? It’s an odd word… Blog. Blog. Blog. It sounds like something that I hear from the pond behind my house in springtime.

According to Wikipedia, a blog is a truncation of the term ‘weblog’, and is a discussion or informational site with discrete entries displayed in reverse chronological order and usually cover one subject.
Note: the blog postings are discrete… separate and distinct. Not discreet… like when someone whispers to you that you have blueberries stuck between your teeth.

The words in that definition that bother me are “usually cover one subject”. Who can narrow down all of the vibrance of life to just one subject? Well, maybe Sheldon Cooper on the Big Bang Theory, but the rest of us? I’m not so sure. But anyway, I’m going to try my best and see where it goes. My focus is on Maine and vacation homes – everything you didn’t know you needed to know about vacation homes, with a little more Maine thrown in for good measure.

Who am I, you ask? To write about Maine? Am I some 10th generation Mainer who needs a translator so folks from away can understand me? Not at all. I’m a new Mainer. A wash-ashore. And I’m so happy to be here. I still have stars in my eyes and blueberries in my smile (and between my teeth, apparently).

And yes, I’ve been on the Facebook pages, I read the newspapers. I’ve heard the grumblings. Yes, the cost of living is high. Yes, the winters will kill you. Yes the current governor is either a maverick hero or an idiot depending on who happens to be discussing it at the post office. But Maine has something that so many other places don’t have. I know it’s cliche, but Maine has a little something for everyone. It has the ocean — vast and powerful. It has sweeping sand beaches and craggy cliffs that will take your breath away. Maine has mountains (although I must disclose that the only Maine mountains that I have experienced so far are on winding Rt 9 between Brewer and Calais). And don’t forget, Maine has lakes – the roots of so many memories and childhood adventures.

So, back to coming up with one subject to write about. I think a majority of this blog will mostly be musings of a wide-eyed new-Mainer, exploring and sharing with you my discoveries as I discover them as well. And, I guess if I have expertise in any particular subject, it’s the subject of vacation homes. I have some, I’ve sold some, I’ve managed some. I’ve lived in some. It takes a certain breed to drive 17 hours to a cabin only to arrive and find it inhabited with furry things who reportedly love cheese and love to run across your toes during midnight bathroom runs. Yup. If it’s something to do with a vacation home, I’ve pretty much have either heard it or experienced it. So that’s where I’ll start. We’ll see where it goes from there.
